What's good for protecting a tv remote control from drops and knocks- what about wrapping it in insulation tape?

Tape it to the arm of your chair

Insulation tape may hold the plastic together if the outer casing breaks but it won't stop the damage - and the worst damage would be with the printed circuit board; if a soldered joint came undone, it wouldn't work.
You'd need to find something to cushion it - like bubble wrap - but then you might find it not so easy to hold and access the buttons.

why not buy a batch of universal remotes and keep the original one for best?

You could glue it to the front of the telly ensuring that lens was pointed at the receiving lens of the telly - then you just need to walk over to the telly whenever you want to change channels.

... on second thoughts you could avoid having to walk over to the telly if you used a long stick (say a billiard cue) to poke the buttons.

My remote (for a caravan TV) came with a thick plastic cover pouch that is open at the top and bottom, I presume that the open bits are to prevent moisture buildup.

Perhaps you know someone who has a building scale models/planes hobby and has thick clear shrinkwrap to make something similar.

Failing that.... train your cat to walk over the remote on command.

if this really was enough of a problem or you, I would get some flexible tubing and tape it round the whole outside edge, if you drop it, the tube will probably take all the inpact, it will even bounce a little.

Rojash.... You can laugh my dad used to do exactly that. He said he couln't see the need for remote controls.
