Yet another British soldier loses his life yet one will find it hard to find a report of it in any on-line newspapers, WHY?

Why do the military continue with these dangerous foot patrols, when it is becoming more usual for the Taliban to set up these road side bombs? It was dangerous enough when our soldiers carried out patrols in vehicles that did not have the proper protection.

If the tactics are not to be, advance, occupy, advance, occupy, and so on until we drive the Taliban out. Then why don't we just stay put in secure posts and let the Taliban come to us.

These patrols in open country are suicide missions and do not have any advantage.

Perhaps if it was being fought on our streets, then maybe our troops would gain a little more respect, defending the likes of some of the pathetic ones on this site, than they do at present.

Any tactics in that godforsaken hole are bound to fail.

No occupying army (including that of the USSR at its mightiest) has managed to succeed in its objectives in Afghanistan.

Our forces would be better employed in the UK helping to protect our borders and to root out any undesirable elements that do manage to get here.

Of course it would mean dealing with those caught in some meaningful way (instead of giving them council flats, benefits and legal aid to fight their way through the courts) so it will not happen.

Iraq and Afghanistan were always going to be, and now continue to be - this generation's Viet Nam.

An army full of professional soldiers who fight because it is their career, and a temporary situation in their lives are never ever going to win against people who believe themselves invaded, and see the protection of their life and religion as something worth dying for.

The definition of 'terrorism' depends whose rifle barrel you are staring down.

In answer to the question as to why there is little attention given to the loss of individual soldiers in Afghanistan lies with the old adage - "one death is a tradegy whereas 159 deaths is a statstic".

Same with 'big news deaths' in the UK - we all know (or at least should know the names Damilola Taylor and Kriss Donald, but after a while even the brutal murder of children begins to 'numb' the readership.

There should be a national day of mourning after the troops return, so that those who are not personally affected can show
their respects.

Yes and it is these 'illegals' that hold sentiments similar to those that were outlined by andy-hughes, who are slowly swamping this country.

Hi - I watched the memorial service in Iraq this morning - seeing the pictures of all those brave young men and women whose lives have been so tragically wasted made me cry with fury. some were barely older than children - why the hell are we over there (and Afghanistan) lets get out and let the Afghans and Iraqis sort out their own countries. As has been said ,lets protect our borders first and foremost. If anyone on AB has loved ones serving in our armed forces please know that I for one am grateful and proud of them
