Hiding BroadBand Signal

I have BroadBand supplied by BT and you can see the signal on any Mobile Phone or Laptop that is Wireless is there any way that i can hide the signal other than switching off all together. I know that you need a code to connect but i just want to make doubley sure Thanks

I assume you are talking about a wireless router. Log into the router and turn off broadcasting of the ssid.

I don't know of a way to make the signal invisible if you are using the wireless connection yourself.

But so long as you have your hub/router set to WPA-PSK encription, and your "password" is a long string with a good mixture of numbers/letters you will be OK.

You need to disable SSID broadcast, in your router setup page.

Connect to the router by cable first, if possible, then type
192.168.0.1
in the address bar and press 'Enter'.

You will need to enter your details to access the settings.

You should see a tab, or button, headed Wifi or similar, and under there SSID broadcast. You will be able to disable it.

You should change the SSID from the default in any case, as well as the username and password, and set the WPA security.

just to point out all above are true and you can hide your SSID... but there really isn't any point in doing so from a security point of view...

Anybody who is going to try and hack into somebodies wireless is not going to just be using the windows zero configuration utility to locate a wireless network, they would be using something that will show the network regardless of the SSID being broadcast or not.

Just make sure you have security enabled, preferably WPA (WEP is next to useless) and it's about as secure as you are going to get it.

Thanks to all but it is from the hub not a router that i want to hide the signal i don't have any wireless devices myself so i don't need the signal.

OK, it is a router, it's just that BT call them homehubs, login to the admin page of the router by clicking the link below

then click on advanced and look for wireless settings, once you found that take the tick out of "interface enabled", save changes and your wireless is switched off completly

just to put what chuck said about "security" into perspective ... I lost my title last week to some showoff kid (he works with us - he's 36) cracked our wifi security in 9 minutes 50 seconds

and that's every precaution available - full monty ....
