The ref was big enough in the Tottenham Hotspur match to admit he got it wrong .So what of the player involved and others who have got penelties under similar cirumstances .Should they not also say publically that they were wrong to look for the penelty .No chance of it ever happening but would it not be nice and decent for players to be able to say to the ref no I was not fouled it was no penelty .Like they do in snooker where the player can call a foul against them selves Then the offending player who have got a dubious penelty can not hide behind the its got nothing to do with me line ,the ref decision is final .

It would be nice,as you say,but no player these days would dare to incur the wrath of his manager,owner,and fans by doing it. There is far too much at stake and too much money involved. Even in cricket,that supposed bastion of fair play,it is extremely rare,esp in the professional game,to see players walk even when they must know they are out. It seems it is only in golf and snooker (both individual,not team sports) that players still hold to the ideals of fair play (and that's if you can call snooker a sport and not just an overblown pastime)

Is this a wind up? I'm trying hard not to be cynical about this but footballers have been cheating since the game was invented. It's a trait which some humans cannot resist.

If someone wins something they would like to look at in years to come and say I won that .What if the same trophy was won via cheating would it look and feel the same.If it a runners up prize you can look it and said well I gave it my best .Would having cheated not have demeaned it .Or does winning at any cost mean more .

Appparently he did suggest that he regrettted that incident .Not much good to England but it shows that those that cheat do feel remorseful for there actions .Its only a game any game but is cheating not breaking some unspoken law the law of doing the decent thing .

i think mr webb felt sorry for the manures to see them two nil down, so thats why he awarded that penalty. He KNEW it wasnt a penalty, but he just awarded it ..

weecalf - hi - please dont compare football with snooker or any other game. All football players/managers have only one thing in mind - to win at what ever cost. B all and end all. simple.

players have no remorse, no guilt - its a game you win by cheating - you lose by not cheating enough. if you dont like it - tough.

Dont bring the referees into it - theyve never played the game - theyre not really interested in the game - they just like the power it gives them - lets be fair who would want to ref a game and take all that sh*t.

By the way, why should the ref have to apologise for making a mistake? Do the players or managers ever apologise - no - why should they, and why should the ref? - honest desision - honest mistake - move on - game over!

mark01 agree with you .I was suggesting the these players managers should think of and respect the game and hand it over to the next generation not just a who can cheat the best to will as you suggest .They are making a good living from it so they should be charged with protectng its future.I used snooker only as an exampe of the fact other sports still maintain the values of sportmanship.
