Why is General Grievous always coughing? I heard the Clone Wars cartoon explains it, but I haven't seen it.

Near the end of the last episode, as Greivous is escaping with the Kidnapped Palpatine. Mace Windu uses the force to crush his "ribs?" . He begins coughing there.
