Error message

Can anyone tell me what this means and what I need to do about it, please?!

 

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT  The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications.

 

It relates to a Microsoft program which worked perfectly well the last time it was used.  When I put the CD-Rom in to see if that makes a difference, there's no sign of life at all (yet if I put other CD-Roms in, they work fine).  I am at a loss!  Thank you in advance.

Sorry this isn't an answer but I get exactly the same message trying to install a certain programme - I "believe" its a compatibility issue, have you recently upgraded your system (windows 98 to XP for example) and thi sprogramme is a fairly old one - there is an option for compatibility settings that you can try - Right click the programme, click the properties and compatibility tab (sorry if this is something you have tried - I tried this on the one im having problems with and it Still didnt work? but this was the advice given)

Thanks alunrw - I tried that too, although I didn't really think it would work.  The only recent change has been an upgrade to broadband.  I'm running Windows XP and the program always worked on it before now.   Mystified!  But thank you, again, for your suggestion.

I have read it is due to spyware deleting this file. You can copy it (autoexec.nt) from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32 then make it read only. Then run spybot and adaware.
