Renewal of Wedding Vows Ceremony

I have been invited to attend a friend's Wedding Vows Renewal Ceremony followed by a reception and wonder if I should take a gift - as one would do if invited to the original ceremony, which took place 15 years ago.
I must admit that until my attention was drawn to the subject I would not have given the matter any consideration!
Can anyone advise please.

When invited to any occasion I think it's customary to offer a gift it could be a couple of crystal glasses for example.
By the way, do people renew their vows because they've broken them? what's the reason to do this?

It's a custom often seen here in the U.S. Gifts are deffinitely optional since, in most cases, the renewal (or affirmation) ceremony is conducted after many years of married life and it's assumed the married couple really don't need another toaster as they did when first married. Most gifts are of the gag variety...
Although the ones I've attended are fun get-togethers for family and friends, most involve syrupy platitudes that are meaningful only to the "bride" and "groom"... food's usually pretty good though, since the woman of the house needs to show off her culinary skills obtained of the interceding years from when it was well known she couldn't boil water without scorching it...
