my son sent some stuff back to one of the big DIY stores, and they are going to give him his money back. the thing is they want to pay it back into his account but as they will only deal with him and he is in NZ. He has closed this account for now and so there would be no account for them to pay money back into. It is quite a large sum of money as well.

do you think if he wrote a letter asking for a cheque explaining all this it would be acceptable, or is there another way round it.

this is a bit of a problem jan, when I worked in retail, we had to refundt onto the card it was payed on, if it were payed by cheque and it is a large amount, ID is required, ie; passport, driving licence, utility bill, something with the name and address on it, if it had been a debit card, a signataure is then required.
If he paid by using his debit card they normally want to pay back to that account. What about a voucher or credit note? Is that a possibility?
there must be a solution - they have their goods back and they still have his money. Copy your question over to Law jan.
The reason they want to pay it back on to his card is because:

1. They paid a fee of at least 2% to process that payment. They can only get that back if they refund on to the card used to pay.

2. To stop money laundering, believe it or not.
