Using preferably a cylinder mower, although it will be ok with a rotary, cut a whole row in one direction, then turn round and cut the next alongside in the opposite direction, and so on.

The effect is caused by the layering of the blades of grass in opposite directions on adjacent strips.
I thought that the stripes were made by using a mower with a roller attached. Then if you mow first in one direction and then the opposite direction next to it, the stripy effect is made.
You need a bl00dy big brush and two big tins of slightly different shades of green paint...
sngs...why buy two tins, I'm sure you could do it with only one tin ... providing it is a different shade from your grass.

Stripes. Note the stress on a mower with a rear roller.
