I am in debt and have arranged an I V A. My neighbour is threatening to tell my employer and work colleagues and parents at the school I work in. I am a teacher. Can I stop her using the law?

Not sure of a legal answer, but how on earth does your neighbour know about this and why would he/she feel the need to tell employers?

It is no ones business but your own. What a nasty piece of work.

If you went bankrupt then the details would be in your local paper. In the case of an IVA it is no concern of any other person, although you should inform your employer. If this woman tells all and sundry there is probably not a great deal you can do, if she told lies about you then you could sue her for slander, but the thing is it would be the truth. What a cow, my guess is that in these times, there are probably quite a few of the parents, and possibly some other teachers who have an IVA running, so don't feel ashamed.

No you don�t need to tell your work, you only need to tell them if you work in the financial sector i.e. accountant (like me) or work selling insurance or work in an bank.

Don�t think there is any law� because slander would need to be proven.
However, what they are saying is the truth.
Just hold your head up and say they are just causing trouble and there is no truth in the rumours ride it out say you are not bothered and it may never happen

But would they be so nasty to go to all that bother to look it up?

In addition, how did they find out in the first place?

Maybe the neighbour is a creditor or knows someone who is or knows?

I use the online insolvency register quite a bit through work and it's very easy to check if you know where to look.

What does the neighbour hope to gain by it?

Your name will appear on the register. But unless people know where to look they won't find it! There is nothing to be ashamed of. There are many people in IVAs these days. Even Bankruptcy doesn't have the stigma that it used to have. I am puzzled as to how your neighbour knows though.

If you think she is serious about this, I suggest the best thing you can do is to see the school Head and explain. Tell him/her that you have a vindicative b.... of a neighbour who is threatening to tell all and sundry.

Your IVA is absolutely nothing to do with your employer (or the childrens' parents) and there is no rational logical reason for them to be in any way concerned about it. What it means is that - like very many other people - you have some financial difficulties. But unlike quite a lot of people you are not hiding your head in the sand but have taken action to deal with your problems. You should be applauded for that, not vilified by an ignorant nasty neighbour.
