You don't have to pay for a scan Polly. The vet can simply take a blood sample and check for the relaxin hormone that all pregnant bitches have. This hormone remains in the bloodstream throughout pregnancy, so if it's not there, your dog is either not in pup, or has lost them. The tests can be taken from about 3 weeks after you think your dog may be pregnant, and the results come back in about 20-30 minutes. Charges vary at different surgeries, but it'd a lot cheaper than a scan'd be.
I doubt it would be cheaper - a scan can cost as little as 20 and a consultation and blood test would I imagine be more than that. I would also prefer the scan as its non invasive, and they don't even need to shave a patch. There are scanners now in many areas, and as I said before, there are a lot of farmers who use them, so it should be easy to find one.
