apart from Skype what other service offers a free web cam to web cam service ?

Thanks for the great info Ethel, the reason I asked is that I am totaly new to this and Skype is already on this laptop of mine, but when I have searched on Skype for friends that I know have web cams they dont appear to be on there so I assume they are using something other than Skype...
Or have I got it all wrong ?
