Sad News.

Good morning all. Just wanted to share my sad news with all you good peeps on A & N.

This morning my lovely cockatiel, Cheeky, died. It was very sudden, he was on his perch last night when I went to bed, and this morning he was still warm, so I think he died early this morn.

He was an old bird, we rescued him about 12 years ago, and we don't know how old he was when we took him in.

His mate, with whom he shared a cage for about 12 years, is now alone. I spoke to hubby about whether we should get a companion for the remaining bird, but hubby thinks it's best to leave him on his own, because he is very old, and might struggle with someone new.

I'm worried that he will pine to death without his companion. Anyone got any thoughts on this please?

give your remaining bird some time to grieve (and yourselves too)and maybe u and mr. c might decide whether to get another companion.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I'm struggling with a very ill dog at the moment, I know her time is very limited. Our pets mean so much to us, don't they?

I wouldn't rush into getting a replacement, give your self time to think about things. Wendyxx

So sorry to hear the news. I would leave it for a while before getting another bird. I suspect the older one may not take to the newcomer.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about cockatiels, therefore can't advise you. But having seen your post I just wanted to say sorry for your loss. It's no different than losing a cat or dog, they're all much loved pets and family members.

Aww..hi hun. I too know nothing about birds,but I just wanted you to know how sorry I am to hear this. One of our clients at work just lost an African grey that he'd had for 30 years.....it is so sad when they've been with us that long. xx

I am sorry to hear about your bird. I had a budgie once and it died when I was about 8. My mum said that he had flown away back to Africa and I worried about him for months - maybe the big birds were picking on him.

When I was about 16 mother finally confessed that he had died and she had disposed of his body. She didn't want to tell me that he had died in case it upset me - but he was old and I expected him to die- no flap his wee wings on the dangerous journey back to Africa.

I have no idea why I typed all that or why I even remembered it.

I am sure that Cheeky is in a much better place.

Wolf, I'm chuckling about that wee budgie - it goes to show that sometimes trying to spare people's feelings can backfire!

All my pets are very dear to me, but Cheeky was extra special because I'd rescued him from appalling conditions and he wasn't expected to survive the journey back to my house. He certainly was a fighter.

So sorry to hear about the loss of Cheeky, it's so awful when you lose a pet, give your other bird time to adjust and he might well get on fine without the company of Cheeky.Sorry for your upset mrs.chappie.g.

I haven't really got any advice other than have a word with a bird sanctuary. They may be able to advise you on what to do in such situations as these.
