What is multiplication by partitioning?
11 Answers
My daughter has come home with some maths home work which involves multiplication by partitioning. Shes only 7 and she says she doesnt know what it is? I'm assuming they have done it in the class room or why would she be given it as home work. Its upsetting her because she doesn't want to get in trouble off the teacher. I just need to know what it is so i can help her through it, its a long time since i was at school and i havent got a clue, thanks.

It just means splitting numbers to make the calculating a wee bit easier. For example,
15 x 18 is the same as (10 + 5) x (10 +8) and that can be written as (10 x 10) + (10 x 8) + (5 x 10) + (5 x 8) or
100 + 80 + 50 +40 = 270

A really good method for this is the grid method-

this gives a tutorial on it. I find this way helps me keep track of which numbers I've dealt with! With regards to your daughter not knowing what partitioning is they should (like you said) have done it in the class but they should also be very comfortable with how to partition before being given any work on using it in multiplication. Maybe ask the teacher if they could explain partitioning again to your daughter.
