Sad Song, ballad-type, 50's or maybe 60's

This song is sung by a girl about a boy she knew as the kid next door, and their lives going by, and her realization that time went to waste when she learns he has either died or married someone else. I just don't know! I only recall it's a beautiful sad song, an oldie. It's rather well-known but I never hear it anymore, and can't recall the title or anything solid about the theme. Does it ring a bell to any of you? Seems like the boy's name was "Davy" or something similar.
