The Great British Birthday

Some of my colleagues grumble about having to come to work on their birthdays and feel that they should be given the day off. I disagree. Why should people have a free holiday on a certain day of the year just because they were born on the same day years before? Birthdays have never meant much to me. I don't celebrate my own and don't expect any special treatment on that day. Then the idea occured to me that it might be worth celebrating our birthdays if they were all on the same day. So let's standardise the British Birthday! It would become an institution and a national holiday for all to enjoy!

May I nominate April 24th as British Birthday Day.

Just curious - when is your birthday sglazier?  Its not towards the end of April by any chance? 

Whether for birthdays or any reason I'd be four-square behind a proposal for another bank holiday - it would need to be about October to break up the long, bank-holiday-less, summer to christmas stretch.

Totally agree.  I don't see a birthday as anything special, certainly not past the age of 21.  I'm approaching forty and the last thing I want is a party or any sort of fuss made.  That's not because I'm in 'denial' about my age, I just don't see any significance in it.

I don't like receiving cards as they are a waste of money.  Why pay an exorbitant amount for a piece of cardboard that has no other use?

Yes please, my birthday is 26th April so the National Birthday Day would be near enough.  If HM has an official birthday then we should be able to.

I Agree as long as its november 30th.Im way past 21 but I enjoy giving and receiving cards pressys etc.And have a few Becks to celebrate!! Your a long time Dead so why not!!Philtaz invite your family around or a few friends and have a party( :)::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Good idea sglazier. St George�s day is on April 23rd so I think the 24 is a bit too close. I think June 1st:-) is a good idea and very easy to remember..And Vinny Nov 30 is St Andrews day.lol

Since passing 30 I've not been so bothered about my own birthdays, because I don't particularly want to be sent token bits of cardboard or bulky presents that I don't want which only get in the way.  But I still like sending birthday cards to other people I care about.  Sometimes I also send birthday cards to people for their half-birthdays (e.g. 27 1/2) or their thousand-birthdays (e.g. 8000 days old).

If we have to have a standardised birthday for everybody, I think it should be 26th November.

jno an excellent idea! Yes we have a public holiday on the 25th of April ofr Anzac Day so that would be perfect timing especially when it fell on a Thursday and Friday. Erm, but how do we get Australia to celebrate British Birthday? I know, let's make it world Birthday. Don't racehorses all have the same birthday btw?

btw, most common birthday in the USA is October 5 - something to do with being 9 months after New Year's Eve. Don't know what the UK equivalent is.

If my birthday falls on a weekday I almost always take a holiday and have a nice leisurely day.  Also enjoy receiving birthday cards and love sending them to friends and family.

Maybe a good idea would be to have it when Britan was discovered or something would be more appropriate me thinks. I always book my birthday day off but its probably as im 22 but as i get older im sure the affect will wear off. I just have it as a 'me' day as i certainly don't get many at all.

My colleagues & I used to enjoy celebrating our birthdays at work, especially with the naughty fresh cream cakes!

What's this obsession with cake?  (I see the mention of cake on various posts.)  Champagne, I say!   Birthdays are a celebration of being alive, not just of having been born, for oneself, whether it is a quiet drink on one's own or a celebration with a few close people who are glad one's still here!  We should ALL l be glad we are still here.  I don't like the idea of standardised anything as other holidays have been.  The day should be THE day, whenever it is, celebrated loudly or quietly as one wishes.  Sorry, you guys who want another excuse for a hol.  You'll have to think of something else.  Have a thought about the people working on their 'birthday'.   Not so bad if they have to keep things going on another  Public Hol.( not so personal) but you'd have people like Philtaz moaning and groaning, yet others to whom the day meant a lot could be among the workers on that day.   A National Birthday - a no-no for me, I'm afraid.
