3 down: Shakespeare's misfortune with Romeo leaving, gadzooks.
The answer is "oath" but what is the word (from which the R is removed) that is a Shakespearean misfortune?

You're nearly there. The Shakespearean word for misfortune is WROATH - W (with) and R (Romeo) leaving.

Rapparee. Great stuff, thanks. Never thought of w as abbreviated with.
Hi stultus

I answered this very clue for someone else earlier today. If they would only fix the 'search' facility it would be much easier for everyone.

Ooops. I had blitzed the crossword and quizzes and puzzles section earlier, and had seen your reply, but as I recall your reply did not actually explain the answer. At least, not the one I came across.
But then, I am "stultus".
Agree stultus. His earlier reply did not explain the solution in detail. Perhaps he should have used the search facility to see how he did not explain what the WR meant and not be so condescending.
Totterdown

I have noted that you feel I was condescending towards stultus. In over 5years and some 25000 answers to questions this is the first time I have this charge made against me.
I agree that I did not fully explain the WR element of the clue but my other comment was a renewed dig at the AB people who have been telling us that the search facility would be restored to it's previous status.

I always try to be helpful as I believe my record demonstrates.
kayakamina, perhaps my use of the word "condescending" was a bit harsh and I apologise. I did not know that the AB people were supposed to be sorting out the search facility. I am sure you always try to be helpful towards anyone needing help. I was just pointing out that that people sometimes need to know fully how an answer is arrived at, including me sometimes. Even then I do not always get it! Sorry again.
Thanks for coming back Totterdown and for your comments.

During my long membership I think I recognise from the names of the questioners those who only want a hint to the answer and those who would like the answer but work out the logic themselves.
I realise that this can be frustrating to other solvers but as they are the ones asking, they can also call for answers anyway they like.
As I now mainly try to help with the so-called 'advanced' crosswords it works well most of the time.

Cheers K
Dear Kayakamina,
You have given me many a 'leg-up' for solutions in the past, and I and others should only be grateful to you for the time and patience you must spend in helping people who are beginning to tear their hair out. A big thankyou!
PS. I had already finished the Mephisto, with a little help from my Answerbank friends, earlier in the week, but could not help looking at this string when trying to put the site onto my 'favourites' on this new Mac computer....
Hi crockshard

Thank you for your very kind comments.

I suspect that I've probably been doing this type of crossword for longer than you - over 65 years!

Enjoy your new computer.

I've been around long enough to know that you are an all round top man whose skill at crosswords is awesome. I took no offence from your original reply to me, realising that you were getting at the search facility, but equally thanks to Totterdown for sticking up for me, needlessly as it happened. I love the spirit of this crossword forum.
Paul (Stultus)
Thanks stultus for mentioning me in the context you did. The thing is I am never too proud to apologise and say sorry if it is pointed out that I may have overreacted and misunderstood something. It is noticeable that on other subjects too in AB some people will never admit they are wrong. It doesn't take much to say "yes, you were right. Sorry". Good luck with crosswording. I am a great fan of the cryptic crossword and take my hat off to people like kayakamina who make it sound so easy (especially the horror known as Mephisto).
