I would agree that the law of averages dictates that we are not the only intelligent life-form in the universe. I do however feel that looking for planets with similar eco-systems to ours simply narrows the perameters. Why not life forms with no physical form at all? Or beings who see with sound and communicate by smell? The possibilities are literally infinite, so we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for saucers in the sky - our visitors may already be here!

Okay TW consider this then. If you were from an alien advanced civilisation and could monitor us to see if you should make contact, would you? We can't even sort out little problems between ourselves like religion, border disputes and economic V enviromental issues so would you bother to contact us? I think I would leave it from anthoer couple of millenia till we grown up a bit as a species. and to the original question there must be lif out there due to the reasons given in the excellent answers before, but as to it's nature or technological advancements it's anybodies guess.

Eric von Daniken has written some revolutionary books on his take on life beyond earth. His perspective is refreshing. In 'Chariots of the Gods' he considers historical evidence like ancient paintings and sculptures and links them to the existence of life beyond our planet. One of his more obscure (but thought-provoking) claims is that the origin of life on earth was a seed brought to this planet by alien beings (god?!) from another galaxy. The coolest thing is that his books are packed with real-life evidence which he interprets as proof of the ancient alien visits. His books are a highly recommended read for anyone who's interested in diverse perspectives on perhaps the biggest mystery of our world.
