Way to cut back, cutting front, for example (8)

I know the answer is INSTANCE (it has to be, I have I_S_A_C_ and clearly means example) but the clue is driving me crazy. Any explanations greatly appreciated.

way to cut (snip ) back, cutting front = ins ?
To 'back' someone's project etc. is to 'finance' it.
Cut the front off this, cut it with 'way' i.e. ST (short for 'street') & you get INSTANCE

brilliant, thank you.
(F)in(st)ance: Remove('cutting front') the F from finance = 'back', around st = 'way'.

I'm not too good at parsing clues, but I hope you get my drift.
