If you don't mind the targeted ads then some of the benefits are that you can use a search engine to search your emails for keywords, it's much quicker and easier to navigate than hotmail (where I have to click about 3 links and wait some time before reading any new email : why do hotmail links take forever?) and any email conversations are listed as such with what's been said in previous mails listed above so that it's easy to follow.
If anyone's interested I have lots of invites. <this username> at gmail dot com.

yes I'd agree.
at the end of the day, it's just web-based email. however, you get lots of great features (and its free): over 2GB of space (this increases each day), 10MB attachment max size, search facility, good junk mail protection, free POP, great little notifier programs, etc.
targeted ads: no problem at all. I dont even notice them. I notice the untargeted ads on hotmail much more, they're far more intrusive. plus, hotmail has this huge bulky interface, that half the time never loads right anyway. gmail just works. it lets you read and send email. and its great.

I like gmail because I can run it through Outlook, but still have the convenience of a web based email account. My friends like the fact that they can access their email through their mobile phones using g-lite too. It's the best web based email I've used. Also handy is it sorts messages by conversation - you can go into any message and quickly access any replies you or the recipient have subsequently made - sounds complicated but is really easy. I'm a definite fan!
