Beware of pickpockets. I had a wallet stolen on a crowded train and didn't feel a thing. Otherwise it's a fabulous city

Outside of the Vatican itself (which is pristine), be prepared for streets even more full of dogsh!t than London and more graffiti than you can imagine - which kinda spoils an otherwise lovely city.

Do a open top bus tour, you can hop on/off at all the relevant sites (Forum/Coliseum, Spanish Steps, Trev Fountain, Circus Maximus etc.) and they are pretty good value. Look down the back streets, away from the tourist hotspots, for the best food (both quality and value).

Go to Piazza Venezia, at the south of Via del Corso (the main shopping area of Rome), ....with care i might add as motorbikes, cars, and buses often fly through here trying to beat the traffic. There you'll find the Heart of Rome, the National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II, climb the steps to the top to get a 360 degree view of Rome! Its amazing!

Enjoy every moment of it, its a beautiful city...and congratulations on your anniversary!

When are you going?

I went a few years ago in August, and to be honest, it was too hot to do anything.

The pavements were hot and walking around was hot, so I hope you are not going in August.

my advice is to have a bl00dy fantastic time, what better way to celebrate your 25th anniversary than in one of the most romantic cities on earth, have a great time (i'm very jealous) and happy anniversary :)

Mind your bag near the Vatican and in the train stations.

open top buses - great way to see the sites.

The Vatican Museum is overrated and you don't need to pay for Vatican tours - there are American students there each afternoon who do tours for tips.

City centre restaurants can be tricky - the price on the menu will have cover charge, service charge, taxes, tip added. If there's wine on the table and you don't want it, send it back or you'll be charged. Ditto bread.

try get a Lonely Planet guide - they're great.

Despite the above, it's a great city! Take a tour of the Colleseum and make sure you see the Pantheon too. Actually, you can do an Angels and Demons tour now!

Arrived back from Rome last wed and what a a fantastic place it is, we had a brilliant time and a lovely anniversary. Took note of all of your tips and didnt get robbed! think i was a bit paranoid! Only downside, got ripped off by a taxi driver when we arrived and found the city centre restaurants very expensive, 12 euros for a bowl of soup!!! so went for the back street places which were great, the real heart of rome. When we arrived home our daughters surprise present was a superbreak in London and tickets to see mamma mia!, so i went to work and hubs had to unpack, do the washing and pack the case again.! Have had a wonderful 25th!!! Thanks again to you all xxx
