Is this actually a spooky bit of music, and was intended as so, or is it just unintentionally freaked out by it, or has One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest just freaked me out a bit too much?

I don't quite get your drift but 'Charmaine' by Mantovani and his Orchestra was a massive instrumental hit on Decca Records in the early ninety fifties. One of many which included 'Swedish Rhapsody', another haunting piece which was played over the titles of a BBC short drama featuring John Laurie (later private Frazer of Dad's Army) who played a rather sinister criminal. A vocal version of Charmaine was later a minor hit for The Batchelors in January of 1963. I don't think Mantovani's version was intended to be spooky. Does this help?

Talking of 'Spooky', whilst I was sending the above reply, Mantovani's 'Swedish Rhapsody' was played as part of the background music to BBC2s coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show. I haven't heard it for years. Weird that.
