how do i stop squirrels from stealing from bird feeders

even squirrel proof feeders do not work

help please

I am sure this is impossible, I have tried everything, hanging from trees and tying to the ground, hanging from really thin branches that the squirrel will never be able to walk along (how wrong I was) and I still find that the poor birdines have no food. I think squirrels are so resourceful and determined if they can find the feeders they will eat / steal them, if anyone has any good suggestions I will be equally keen to hear them!!!

My neighbour placed two metal conductors around the post of his bird table and wired it to the mains.  When the little blighters ran up and shorted out the conductors they soon became very scortched.  ******I would not advise this as it's very dangerous and not really very humane.***** but it is soooo efective.

try getting a bird house that sits on a pole and then grease up the pole so they can't climb it.

Little Beasts!  I buy those metal fat ball holders that have a cover, tie the cover down with wire, hang the things on a very long, also thin string from a great height and encourage the dogs to chase up and down the garden, barking.  I tie the bottom of the nut feeders through the mesh so that they can't get them off either.  A friend who is a Forest Ranger just says "get an air gun and shoot the bu**ers".  He might be right.

I've had very good luck with 3 seperate feeders on poles.  I've driven the pole supports (2" inch steel tubing) into the ground.  About 4 feet up I mounted a piece of 6" stove pipe.  It is about 3 feet long.  I used tin snips to cut one end into vertical strips that are then flattened against the pole and held fast with a 2 1/2" hose clamp.  This is not as difficult as I've probably made it sound.  The varmints run up under the pipe and try to figure it out, but run back down without success. They've even chewed the bottom of it in frustrated desperation.  You must assure the pipe is driven in the ground away from any overhanging tree limbs.  The mounted birdfeeders are then approximately 7 feet off the ground.  Best of luck!

If they are red squirrels let them feed if they are grey squirrels shoot the @#?+?@~# they are nothing more than tree rats.

We once had a squirrel who chewed through the top of the net on a common red net of nuts, then with the top of the bag in its mouth, ran off with the entire net of nuts. It was funny, but the fact that my mum had only put the birdfeeder out an hour beore hand made it hilarious!!
