thank you paulineward - I had thought of doghole but dismissed it and again thought of grigging but cannot find it in any dictionary
I had to look for it also... :-)

Is EGENCIES a word? I too have this clue left in the grid, and although I think this is the answer, I cannot find a definition anywhere for this word.
