In 2000, my partner's then-girlfriend surprised him by proposing, and they were married the following week - she had booked the Register Office etc without his knowledge.
I wondered, how could this be done back then? I know nowadays we are required to give 15 days notice of intent to marry, but was the law the same then?

she culd have booked it more than 15 days in advance. hen got married in 2001, i dealt with the register office completely and mr bednobs didn't go there till the wedding day, so it could be done
i booked mine on the monday and we got married on the friday......talk about rushing into things lol
leap year 2000. She proposed - he accepted! You can book a registry wedding & not tell him till the week before - easily done.

so has the law changed? I ask because we've just booked our wedding & we both had to be present in front of the Registrar, be interviewed individually & then together, which got me wondering how can people book surprise weddings nowadays?
