Noisy phone line - anyone help please?

Noise on phone line - very crackly. When it happened ages ago the BT Engineer said if it happened again to buy an ordinary corded phone and plug it into the main socket and unplug the others. (I have a digital phone/ansaphone and three other handsets normally). I connected the new phone to the main socket as it comes into the house, but none of the other phones or the computer work.

Get back onto BT and get them to check the line. This happened to my Grandad, he argued with both BT and Tiscalli (coz they provided the phone line and internet). It took over two years and eventually three weeks ago a BT Engineer came out and discovered FOUR faults on the line, even he said it was the worst he had seen.

What are the REM values on your handsets......as far as I can remember you shouldn't have a value of more than 4 on a single landline....the value should be printed somewhere on the handset....

Kath, is it quieter when you have one phone only plugged into the main socket?

if it is then it's a fault with your internal wiring and nothing to do with BT, if it's still noisy on the main socket then it's a BT problem.

Fadeout: Can't go to BT as I'm now using PLUSCOM who won't report a fault if its caused on the house side of the line. until I did all sorts of engineer-type things which I
really didn't understand. When it happened before I was with Tiscali and they did deal with it.

Craft - the system is okay for 4 handsets I checked.

Any more help please...........

I don't understand why the original BT Engineer recommended using a single phone with a wire, and the digital ones unplugged????

The single, corded phone, is to check if it's a problem with your internal wiring or the line coming into the house.

if the corded phone is quiet when connected direct to the master socket then it's got to be a problem with your internal extension wiring.

what you do then is start connecting things again one by one and see when the noise comes back.

The chances are though that it is either a broken lead on one of your extension leads or a badly wired plug or socket somewhere

Hi,

A crackily line can be caused if your external wiring runs through trees etc. It is your responsibility to keep your trees trimmed so that the twin telephone cable has a clear path from the pole to your entry point.

You need to take the front off the master socket to reveal the BT test socket . Plug a reliable corded phone into this socket. This method will isolate your internal wiring . If the fault persists then you need to get in touch with your supplier. If it disappears then its an internal fault.
From experience it sounds like an external line fault
