If my dad and Freds dad are cousins then what relation am I to Fred? I was told that it was 2nd cousin, but I thought 2nd cousin was my cousins child.

Click here for a web-page all about such relationships. Your two fathers, as cousins, share grandparents...ie Fred and you have common ancestors in great-grandparents. On the web-page, look at the top of Column 3 which is headed GGC for great grandchild (you). Scroll on down from there to GGC in the left-hand column (Fred) and read along that row to where it meets your row. It reads 2C for Second Cousin.

londondave if you read back what you have written you actually answered your own question
Your relation to your cousin's child would be called 'once removed' - ie one generation removed.
actually jno your relation to your 2nd cousins child would be once removed
also true, Gevs1966 - you're one generation removed from both of them. Same for 3rd cousin's children etc. Technically you're once removed from nephews and nieces too, I suppose.
