Spuds in sacks

Mine are just starting to sprout leaves ( I put 4" of earth in sack, planted potatoes & then covered with 4" more of eartha couple of weeks back)When I look at packaging there are 2 different sets of instructions. 1) says let leaves grow to top of bag,them add earth to within 6" of top of bag. 2) says cover with earth when leaves are a couple of inches tall, and repeat this as they grow. Which do I do?

You should keep the new growth covered with just the top showing.It is on those stems that your tats will grow.
Growing mine in a sack to. And beetroot.

I've also been growing potatoes in bags and continually covering up the new green shoots as they poke through. My shoots are now three feet above the top of the bag and looking very lanky so it won't be long before they start slowering and then die back. It's important to check near the surface of the compost to ensure that any top potatoes are not exposed to the sunlight and go green, otherwise you'll have to disgard them. Keep the compost well watered and if necessary cover any exposed potatoes with scrumpled up moist newspaper to protect them from light.

Many thanks samuelcat & Whoever - I've rushed out and covered them with more earth. Next year I think that I'll have to plant them a bit earlier! Does it matter whether it is earth or compost ? (Bag said compost, but in the veg garden they would be in soil)
