There's nothing worse than calling a Geordie a Mackem, or a Mackem a Geordie. I do know a nice Geordie that isn't dim, but he's been living in Yorkshire for a fair few years so it's softened up the edges.

Yes Joy, twas dear old Hartlepool that hanged the Monkey. Story was an English Man 'o War had said creature as a mascot and it was clothed to look like a sailor. Storm hits the ship and it runs aground. Monkey survives and is interrogated but neither party understands the other. It's believed that it was from a French ship and therefore a spy sent by Napoleon.

Tried in Stockton, hanged in Hartlepool - giving rise to the Hartlepool FC mascot H'angus.
