There are 49 states in the United States. Virginia is not a state, it is a "commonwealth".

WHOA! This is the final answer (I am an American): There are 50 states in the US...that's it...50... hince, the 50 stars on our flag...

(that includes Alaska and Hawaii)...the UK has nothing to do with the United States...

plus the District of Columbia - basically Washington, deliberately set up on a sort of neutral territory that isn't a state. Being a commonwealth doesn't stop you being a state; Massachusetts is one too.

HAnn521, the claim that the UK is a state is based on what is perceived locally as Tony Blair's excessive obedience to George W Bush.
