I'm trying to find out the singer of the song the 1st time (ever I saw your face) I don't really know if the brackets are necessary. Apparently it is quite haunting a female singer sings it and it was played on the radio quite a bit earlier this month and last (Nove& Oct) any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Roberta Flack?
The original female version was indeed roberta flack though this isn't the person who did the version being used in the toothpaste ad. Do check out a version by Ewan MacColl (Kirsty's Dad) who wrote the song.
Just in case you're interested, The Stereophonics covered that song as a B-side a little while back. I think it might have been on the Handbags & Gladrags CD Single. Also, George Michael covered it on an album a few years back. "Songs From The Last Century" i think it was called. All good versions, as it's a beautiful song, but i think most people associate it most with Roberta Flack.
Celine Dion also covered it.
Oh well, mother said there'd be days like these.
Johnny Cash does a great version on his latest album - The Man Comes Around. The absolute original was done by Ewan MacColl's wife. Her name escapes me at the moment.
Roberta Flack always gets the credit for doing the first version... but she wasn't the first by a long way! Loads of folk singers did it before her, the first being the song's original subject, Peggy Seeger.
