I'm watching old episodes of The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin and as I never watched the series previously don't really understand the plot.

I take it he had a breakdown when he was running his business and pretended to commit suicide and disappeared, but why does he adopt all these different personas when he comes back. Is he a bit loopy?

he was unhappy as boring reggie so when he returns he adopts the other personas.

Thanks. When he returns as a different person, his wife falls in love with his new persona, but does she really know he is Reggie, like his daughter does?
