a 720p TV has a resolution of 1280x720
thats a reasonable res...... for a laptop with a 15" screen...
It won't be quite as bad as AC has made out... but everything will be very large and you'll still be sitting the same distance away as you would a smallish laptop screen so some things might look a bit blocky.

You'll now have 1080 horizontal lines, giving 1080 pixels in the vertical direction.
I'm currently using a 19" monitor at 1280x1024. A 1080p TV will have a higher resolution in the vertical direction than this, which is good.
I believe 1080p is 1920x1080. Hence, text should be readable and of good quality (I'd have thought), using DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort as output.

Chuck - you should try my eyes for a day

I just don't think a tv is a pc monitor
ours is softer - good for films - not bad for games
but not sharp enough for serious work
... you can adjust - but then films look stark
as said - reasonable resolution on a 15" screen - but you are doubling that and then some ... as well as siting 4 or 5 times further away
(music is OK though!)
