The whole honours thing is ridiculous. Civil servants are guaranteed a gong simply for getting to a certain grade. There must be more knights in Whitehall than anywhere else. Giving a gong to sportsmen and half decent actors has devalued it even more. As for peerages, the sooner we do away with them and have an elected senate (as in the USA) the better. Acting, like any other job, depends more on getting the right breaks than anything else. British cycling won more golds because of the money invested. We had the biggest cycling team by far. Awards to dinner ladies and lollipop men are ridiculous too. As for doing your job, I remember when long service got a gold watch. Not any more! My friend at Fords got a 600 cdinner service after 25 years and a 600 camer after thirty but that is unusual nowadays. Christopher Lee can afford his own camera. BTW, hasnt he lived all his adult life in the US, Anthony Hopkins thinks so much of us that he emigrated to LA as well.
