I have a work colleague whos son is starting at Plymouth Uni too.
They're dropping him off but he's also passed his drving test & will be getting a run around car.
When they go to see him they'll be staying at a Premier lodge/inn
They live near Cambridge at the moment
Megabus do the route.

Advance purchase train fares can also be cheap.
Journeys on the line from Waterloo to Exeter and then onto Plymouth are generally cheaper than direct trains from Paddington.

Don't forget to vist the gin distillery in Plymouth.
I live in Plymouth...my daughter takes the coach from Vicctoria for as little as 12.......the train from Paddington as little as 24.
The best B&Bs are in the Hoe / Barbican area
