I wish people would stop making ridiculous kneejerk guesses that bear no relation to the clue. Please leave the answering to those who know what they're talking about!

Easy mistake to make in this case Quizmonkey. People could have read this as two different questions and Checkmate may have seemed a good answer as it is the name of a novel.

I was under the impression anyone could give suggestions as to the answers then the question setter could take which answer he/she thought wa sappropiate

A good clue would have been "town in the north east!" (except it's a city isn't it?)

I thought 'novel chess move' was a good and easy clue!
Some of the clues I found really hard to solve until the penny dropped of course.

Thanks for all your answers I did ask for a clue but I would not have got the answer. I had never heard of a chess move called castleing.
