I can still remember some Spanish from school. (I occasionally write letters, or send emails, in Spanish. They're probably not perfect but the recipients always seem to understand them!).
I'd love to learn Dutch. I can 'get by' with the basics, and I used to make some station announcements in Dutch when I worked on the railways, but I'd love to be fluent.
With a bit of pointing, and a few basic phrases, I managed to make myself understood in Germany last weekend.
I'll be in Italy in 8 days time and I'm confident that I can buy my rail tickets, order a beer, etc, but I'm certainly far from fluent ;-)
However, when I tried a few things from a phrasebook in Sweden and Denmark, I only received a mixture of bemusement and confusion!
