What are the chances of us having John Wick as the new speaker or is Anne Widdecombe the hot favourite?!

Jake - "Any evidence for this at all? or should we just assume it's yet another ploy of the papers to influence Government. "

This from the BBC (that well known bunch of right wing reactionaries) quoting Labour MP Stephen Pound..

"Labour MP Stephen Pound said government whips were "touting Margaret Beckett" and said that they should "stop doing it".

Margaret Beckitt is against Parliamentary reform including M.P's expenses.

She will be elected.......Turkey's voting for Christmas comes to mind.
Just been watching the candidates speaking, and I was impressed by:

Richard Shepherd (Tory) Very passionate.

Parmijt Dhanda (Labour) Eloquent (But too young?)

Sir Patrick Cormack (Tory) Persuasive.

Sir Alan Haselhurst (Tory/Deputy Speaker) Has experience.

Which means it's bound to be a dogfight between Widdecombe and Beckett???

More like a Catfight paraffin..lol
Unbelievable! The result of the first ballot has been announced and one of the papers was SPOILED!!!!

Can't they get anything right???
We are down to the last 2 candidates and Bercow is said to be the likely winner. Why him? I believe he said at the weekend one of his first duties is to increase the pay of MPs to bring them up to GPs and other senior jobs. I wonder if that proved an influencial factor?
Bercow's a Tory but gets on better with Labour; other Tories don't like him, so Labour backed him in order to annoy them. Politics, politics.
Bercow's been elected I see.

He's my local MP, personally I'm not impressed by him. Any time I've met him he comes over as shifty and rather seems to like the sound of his own voice.

Probably better than Anne Widdecome though!
