I have tried to book a private booth for my sister in laws 18th birthday party. She doesn't turn 18 till 12:00am on the Sunday, so we would go up town, AFTER midnight (Meaning she is legally 18) on the Saturday to the club. The club have refused to book the table saying she has to be 18 for 24 hours before she can go in a club. Is this true?

dosen't really matter either way - the club is entitled to refuse entry to anyone they want anyway

I understand this, thanks for the update!!

I'm trying to find out if there is a law that states this fact, once I have found out there isn't a law I can appeal to there holding company to have a heart.

But thanks anyway
Are you saying that your daughter was born at precisely midnight? she is not technically 18 until the time she was born on that day, which I would imagine is the reason for the 24hr rule they have in place.

I'm not actually trying to start an argument I just need to know if there is british law that states that no-one is allowed to enter a nightclub until they are 18 and 24 hours old. If this is a law that nightclubs pass (Which by everyones rant's I presume is true) thats fine. I can at least appeal to the nightclub's holding company for a little bit of compassion.

If there is actually a law that states this fact then I won't bother.

All I asked for was some help on Age Discrimination Law, Not a lecture.
No there is no law that states this. Each nightclub can and does make its own rules, as it is private property.

thank you
I wasn't trying to start an argument!

All I'm saying is that it seems a reasonable restriction for the club to have in place, if your daughter was born on 29/6/1991 at 3pm and a club let her in at 12:10am on the 29/6/2009 then they are letting a 17yr old into the club as she would not be 18 until 3pm that day.
Chuck is correct which is why most if not all nightclubs will have a similar policy.
I can't find anything on google but it may be that she has to be 18 at the start of the club's alcohol licence for that day.
Hi paul:

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question directly, sorry.

But would it be possible, say, to make the booking in your name? Just a thought.

The only bit that puzzles me is your very last sentence. Sounds to me as if the club's, shall we say, waffling ?
I seem to recall in a muddled sort of way that you are legally 18 (or any other age) on the day before your birthday.

I have contacted the Holding company who have said they don't know why the Manager said this. They are going to look into it but can't forsee it being a problem as you officially turn 18 (Or whatever age) at 00:00:01 on any given day.

As I went through the proper channels and also admitted she was only just 18 and didn't try and sneak her in they are also going to sort me out with a VIP booth for a discount.

Obviously the nightclub manager, when he discovers I twagged on him and got him in trouble will probably kick me out anyway, but at least I tried!
