Half a Mow

Where I live, when the council cut the grass on the roadside grass-verges they never use grass collection boxes or never rake up and dispose of it,so really they only do half a job they just leave big swathes of grass where it falls.Does this happen in other parts of the country?

Hi Dingerbell, don't know where you live but it's the same in Devon. It looks worse after they have cut it and they always seem to arrive just after I have cleaned the car LOL.

Same in our neck of the woods too. Most of the verge mowing is sub-contracted out by local councils to the lowest bidder and if they were to collect the grass cuttings they would have huge amounts of them to dispose of, which would increase costs. All you can do is complain to your local District or Parish Council and say that you don't feel the job is being done properly. If enough people complain they may actually talk to the contractor and get the standard of cutting improved, but don't hold your breath.

That is considered to be the proper way these days.
As long as the lawn is mowed on a regular basis and the clippings readily filter back down into the lawn, clippings do not need to be collected. Returned in this manner, clippings readily decompose (contain 75 - 80 percent water) and do not cause thatch. Clippings also recycle nutrients, in particular nitrogen, so less fertilizer is needed.

This is why a lot of people round us mow our own verges rather than depending on the council. Some of them of have bedding plants in and look lovely.
