I bought a package of tortillas. Their was a small area on the edge of them that was orange, powdery like. I tore off that part and used all but one of them. A week later, the one left in the package was completely orange and powdery, the entire side and the package had this residue on it from the tortilla. What is this stuff that developed on the tortilla ? Should I take it to the Dept of Health and Human Services ?
It almost sounds like some sort of mould or spore growth...tho I have never seen an orange one. Yes -take it to the Dept of Health, contact The Food Standards Agency, ...or the shop that you bought them from.
I have to admit-I've kept them in the fridge-as suggested on the packet-for a week with no problems. And i've never seen mould on tortillas. If anything-they DRY out.
For Tuxedo to have seen evidence of mould when she first opened the packet indicates a possible problem in the packaging process.
Oh don't get me started on the tortillas available in this country, it drives me nuts!
I was fine with what we had until I went to Mexico (I'm married to a Mexican) and now the only way I can satisfy my cravings is to get them online or bring them back with me from mexico.
Flour tortillas for example are American (tasteless commercial nonsense) and should be avoided. What you want is a corn tortilla...the only one available in the UK seems to be from old el paso, it's ok but
What people here don't know is that tortillas (corn, not flour) need to be heated before use, either fry gently in a spot of oil or even gently heat in a dry frying pan, brings out the flavour and makes them more bendy.
But beware, once you have real tortillas, you'll never go back but they're worth it!!!
