128 bit encryption

 Following onn from this question, does it basically maen that a 128 digit number is required to crack the code?

No, it means the cypher uses 128 bits. It's an indication of how strong the encryption is. 512 bit is used by banks I think. Or even 1024 bit.

That's not bank websites. They use 128. I meant inter bank communications.

also note the type of encryption. for standard encryption, 128bits is far stronger than 128bit public key encryption.
