ffdshow - to use or not to use?

ffdshow keeps popping up to ask if I want to use it / not use it just this once / always, and I usually go with the default which is don't use this time meaning that it pops up again the next time.

On the few occasions where I've tried using it, there doesn't seem to be any obvious difference in the end result.

Is it necessary to decide whether to use it on a per program basis or is it the case that if it works for one then it will work for all?

And if one decides to use it every time is it easy to reset so that I again get to choose whether I want it or not?

It's an xvid codec - the only difference you'll see is that movie files will play normally

I'm assuming that your virus scanner is doing the blocking?

No it's not the virus scanner.

I've just run the one program that I know for sure brings up this pop-up and the title bar of that window says 'ffdshow compatability manager''; there's a timeout but by quick use of the task manager it turns out to be the program itself that was displaying the window. So I've thrown caution to the wind and let it use ffdshow every time.

Since this is not the only program that has displayed the pop-up it's likely to be a common dll that's responsible.

I can't be only person to have had such a pop-up displayed and so it would be nice to know how to reset things and turn off ffdshow if desired. If nothing falls over then that will only be a moot point anyway.
