Can you have a non religious funeral, and who is authorised to lead any 'service'?

You can have a plain non religeous service lead by any person of your choosing. The best persons to advise you on the exact details of how to go about this in your own area is your local registrar who is usual to be found at your council offices.
My Dad was an atheist and said if a 'preacher' was at his funeral, he would come back to haunt us!! We had a non religous service at the crematorium. As Dads coffin was carried in, the opening bars (the quiet bit) of the 1812 Overture were played. (Most crems are quite happy to play any music you supply). Mum led the 'service', talking about how she met Dad and stuff. My brother talked about him as well and my sister read a poem. I couldn't think what to say, so I thought it best to say nothing. Dads coffin then went behind the curtains to the end (cannons etc) of the 1812. Some people said it was the best funeral they had been to. Basically you can do what you want,

I seem to remember hearing once about someone who (legally) buried a relative in their back garden.
My girlfriends Grandma had humanitarian funeral that talked about her, her family and her achievements with a mix memories from her family, for me there was still a spirtual feel to it, my girlfriend however disagreed, anyway you can contact them on like this The British Humanist Association ****************************** Website: http://www.humanism.org.uk/ Email: [email protected] Tel: 020 7430 0908 .
