I just used msn for the first time the other day and noticed a friend was online so sent a quick "hello how are you" and was given the reply "I'm really busy, can't talk" End of conversation. Is this rude - should they have displayed the busy sign...To me it's like someone answering their phone and saying the same then hanging up on you.

Yes, they probably should have set their status to Busy. Of course, it may just have been that they didn't want to talk to you in particular, but it does indeed seem rude.
doesn't seem very rude to me. if they cant talk, they cant talk. they should of course use the busy sign etc. but often people forget to/dont want to.
At least they answered you. Perhaps they could've been a little more polite though with a "Sorry, busy right now, can't chat.. another time ok?"
I'm fairly thick skinned so wouldn't have been perturbed by this in the slightest.
I think you're being a bit too sensitive : there could be a number of reasons why they didn't have the busy sign on.
