Crowns

Do you have to have a crown after you've had a root filling? The dentist says i need one but why can't i leave the tooth as it is? I don't have one on my other root filled tooth. What will happen if i don't have a crown? The tooth is right at the back and is unlikely to get chipped.

Prob depends on the condition of the tooth - I had a root filling about a year or 2 ago (2nd tooth from the back I think) and mine def wasn't crowned - the dentist didn't even hint at the possibility of it needed crowning.

As giz says- you dont necessarily need a crown - If the condition of the gum around the filling was in a poor state, offering easier access for infection, then a crown would make sense, or if you particularly needed it for chewing etc... otherwise, probably not necessary.

I had a root canal last year on top back tooth. It was done under national health. After the root canal the dentist said it should have a crown but that he could not do it on nattional health and that I would have to go private. I reported him to PCT, changed dentists and have not had a crown fitted but I know the tooth is deteriorating and will probably crumble inthe next year or so. My tooth was in a poor condition so I am not surprised but crowns are not always necessary.

I had a root filling 6 years ago with a huge white filling on top of it. I asked the dentist several times to crown it but he always said wait..... to make sure I did not have any more problems. I had a crown fitted 7/07/09 �245.00

Thanks all. So it sounds like it's ok for a few years then should be fitted...
