Female marriage records

In BMD (Marriage) records is the woman's maiden (or previous married) name recorded, or is the listing under her (new) married name? I am looking for details of a relative , married name: Miles, maiden name: Davis, and I am not sure which records to trust. (Marriage would have been in early 1840s).
Any advice appreciated.

yes maiden name, but are you definately looking at all four quarters and also matching the reference letters and numbers after both surnames, in the 1840s they used roman numerals. You have to look in each quarter of the year and the match needs to be in the same quarter.
just to calrify, jan.feb.march are the first quarter and a seperate index, then apr may june, july aug sept then oct nov dec. unlike deaths and births, the marriage is always registered in the same quarter the event took place in, of course births were usual;ly registered up to 6 weeks after the event, sometimes longer, and so can be in a later quarter and even the next year. similar thing with deaths, though not quite as big a delay as births

Thanks for answers - I had assumed that the maiden name was the one to trace. With regard to the page and volume refs given, would both partners of the marriage be on the same page/volume?
The problem I have is that I have to guess relationships and dates. I'm looking for Mary A Miles (nee Davis?), shown in 1861 census as head of family, with Ellen Davis listed as sister at an address the Davis family had lived in at least since 1841 census. Mary is not shown on either 1841 or 1851 census, so I'm having to make assumptions about her history. I'll have to get more census info under the Miles name.
Anyway, thanks for your interest, and, craft, your kind offer. I'm able to access Ancestry via my local library, so I can carry on from there.

Don't give up searching the census records, remember that enumerators may have transcribed names incorrectly, Miles could be shown as Mills and Davis as Davies or similar. If you look at www.FreeBMD.org.uk you can try searching for the maiden name of your relative in the county or district even within a set period of years which will narrow down your answers considerably and give you a closer match.
