My partners daughter likes to think she's a bit gansta and I've seen her refer to her friends as ghetto. I think its because gangta came out of hip-hop music which came from the areas of america which were like ghettos. So ghettos became cool cos its where the music is from and therefore its cool to be known as a ghetto girl (even if you are from Chigwell). You tell me if it makes sense.

Ghetto was originally the Jewish part of Venice. More recently it came to mean the part of town where one race lived, usually more or less segregated from others, and usually poor. For much of the 20th century this meant where black people lived in American cities. (There were also still Jewish ghettoes in some European cities until World War 2). A lot of popular culture sprang up there, including things like hip-hop. So it can seem cool to pretend you're from the ghetto, even if you're really white and well-off.
