Yet another mile stone for the Black population 'The first Black Miss England'.
Why this preoccupation with the colour of the skin? We are constantly told the colour of one's skin should not matter, but at every opportunity for a 'FIRST' it is forever highlighted.
On a personal choice however I don't think Miss Rachel Christie, deserved her title, not because she was Black, but because she was not very pretty, and also by the very fact that she was not the public's choice,.she had gained only nine votes in the public voting part of the competition, compared with fellow finalist Zoiey Smale, who got 2,013.
Incidentally the contestant who came second in the contest, Katrina Hodge, was in my opinion a much more glamorous Miss England and a serving soldier to boot.

The public vote was irrelevant once it got down to the final 15. The judges (whoever they may be) were to judge on their instincts.
The FIRST anything is significant. No one remembers the third man on the moon, but they remember the first. The first non-white Miss England is noteworthy because of its uniqueness. The second and third non-white Miss England (if there is one) will cause less fuss.

I just read this bit from a link on the story:
'When it gets to the top 15, they are judged on their confidence and their posture on stage and they are judged on their beauty and their personality,'
So it seems she may have won because of her confidence and personality, not just her looks afterall.
I didn't watch it so can't comment on that aspect.

Gorgeous Rachel Christie, niece of British athletics legend Linford Christie,
The 5' 10" lean legged lovely is the red-hot favourite at 8/1.
And Londoner Rachel is not just a pretty face either. The 20 year-old stunner has followed her uncle onto the athletics track and is currently in training for the 2012 Olympic qualifiers.
Some of the 'over the top' accolades bestowed upon Miss Christie.
I am not a betting man, but if I were, and was to have bet upon the outcome of this contest I would have chosen Miss Christie, not because I thought her to be the best, but because of the fact that she was able to tick the most boxes, which of course included the fact that she was the niece of Linford Christie.
Therefore a pretty good bet it would seem.

"Surely that's racist isn't it. Do we have a Miss White England?" The title won was not that of Miss Black England, the title is Miss England and the winner is black.
With regards to the public vote, the public counted as an additional judge so their opinion was taken into account..
As for her being black, I didn't even give it a second's thought.
Anything with the odds of 8/1 is hardly a red-hot favourite, she may have had the best chance as judged by the bookies but she was not red-hot.

I do not know who you were addressing your post to, but it certainly couldn't have been me.
Since your post was very hard to understand exactly what you was actually getting at.
I was not asking for a Miss White UK (actually the contest was Miss England).
I or anyone else for that matter, made no reference to monkeys (that only came from the depths of your own mind)
Big up the AOG
What the hell does this mean?

I think we're all missing the point. In 2009, beauty contests are completely out of date. Judging and grading women on their looks is just plain wrong.
The organisers can claim that posture and confidence also play a part, but really - it's no better than judging cattle at a county fair.
As to whether she deserved to win, that's entirely subjective. Some men think that Rene Zellweger is beautiful, where in fact, the truth is she looks like a sulky ant-eater.
AOG, the term 'big up' means 'give praise to'.
Quinlad, I agree that La Roux should win the Mercury Music prize, however the fact that Lily Allen wasn't even nominated for her excellent It's Not Me, It's You' CD is a national disgrace.
