Medicine from the vet?????

Hi all x My 5 year old greyhound "Franky" has a lump under his chin which was pink yesterday but is more angry today. It is outside of the skin by the way. I took him to the vets today and the vet said it is either a skin condition or a tumour. There is a big difference between the 2 conditons. Anyway the vet gave Franky Antibiotic tablets and an antibiotic cream and she said come back in 7 days. Basically my head is battered because they said the same about my lurcher x Rocky. Anyone who is a regular will know that my Rocky was 14 and he had cancer of the thyroid gland. They removed 3 tumours from his throat and also his thyroid gland which in my opinion was detremental to his health because of his age. Anyway any advice would be welcome as if the antibiotics don't work Franky needs biopsy's etc. I am literally done in, so any advice will be welcome x So anyway at the vets i received Rixeline tablets 600mg and also Fuciderm cream. Can i just ask is this the same as fuciderm cream that you get from the doctor to treat ailments such as impertigo?? Many thanks, Cherry x x+

Yes cherrypoker. Basically, Fuciderm cream is used to treat bacterial infections. I'm not sure about the Rixeline tabs, but imagine they do a similar job.
I think your vet'll be trying these first, rather than opting straight for a biopsy, as any anaesthetic's liable to cause problems, whether to a human or an animal, so I think your vet's being careful - and sensible.

If you are unhappy and dont trust your vets judgement may be you should go for a second opinion.

I am sure you are aware, and your vet should be, but if you do need a biopsy carried out on a lump, sighthounds have different anaesthetic needs to other dogs. Although a 'skin scraping' to determine a specific skin problem wouldnt need anaesthesia.

I think Rilexine is used to sort out folliculitis( infected and inflamed hair follicles). (not Rixeline)

Most vets will go down the antibiotic route first to see if it will clear up any infection, then if that does not work they have the second option of a biopsy. You are lucky your vet is not one of the money grabbers who go straight for the ops, blood tests, scans, etc. I am sure if there was anything urgent she would have recommended the biopsy straight away.

hi cherry i am sure, it will be just an infection, rocky was an old boy bless him , if its not better in a few days dont fear the worst it probably just needs stonger antibiotics xxx ruth

Hi everyone,

Thankyou for all your helpful answers. Franky's lump is still there but it's only been a couple of days.
I think i have worried myself because of what i wen through with Rocky last year.
My vet said to take him back on tuesday if the lump hasn't gone down, so i will keep you all informed of his progress.
